Jeremiah Chapter 35

Jeremiah Chapter 35

1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying:
ב  הָלוֹךְ, אֶל-בֵּית הָרֵכָבִים, וְדִבַּרְתָּ אוֹתָם, וַהֲבִאוֹתָם בֵּית יְהוָה אֶל-אַחַת הַלְּשָׁכוֹת; וְהִשְׁקִיתָ אוֹתָם, יָיִן. 2 ‘Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.’
ג  וָאֶקַּח אֶת-יַאֲזַנְיָה בֶן-יִרְמְיָהוּ, בֶּן-חֲבַצִּנְיָה, וְאֶת-אֶחָיו, וְאֶת-כָּל-בָּנָיו–וְאֵת, כָּל-בֵּית הָרֵכָבִים. 3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites;
ד  וָאָבִא אֹתָם, בֵּית יְהוָה, אֶל-לִשְׁכַּת בְּנֵי חָנָן בֶּן-יִגְדַּלְיָהוּ, אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים–אֲשֶׁר-אֵצֶל, לִשְׁכַּת הַשָּׂרִים, אֲשֶׁר מִמַּעַל לְלִשְׁכַּת מַעֲשֵׂיָהוּ בֶן-שַׁלֻּם, שֹׁמֵר הַסַּף. 4 and I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, the man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door;
5 and I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites goblets full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them: ‘Drink ye wine.’
ו  וַיֹּאמְרוּ, לֹא נִשְׁתֶּה-יָּיִן:  כִּי יוֹנָדָב בֶּן-רֵכָב אָבִינוּ, צִוָּה עָלֵינוּ לֵאמֹר, לֹא תִשְׁתּוּ-יַיִן אַתֶּם וּבְנֵיכֶם, עַד-עוֹלָם. 6 But they said: ‘We will drink no wine; for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying: Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons, for ever;
ז  וּבַיִת לֹא-תִבְנוּ, וְזֶרַע לֹא-תִזְרָעוּ וְכֶרֶם לֹא-תִטָּעוּ, וְלֹא יִהְיֶה, לָכֶם:  כִּי בָּאֳהָלִים תֵּשְׁבוּ, כָּל-יְמֵיכֶם, לְמַעַן תִּחְיוּ יָמִים רַבִּים עַל-פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה, אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם גָּרִים שָׁם. 7 neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any; but all your days ye shall dwell in tents, that ye may live many days in the land wherein ye sojourn.
ח  וַנִּשְׁמַע, בְּקוֹל יְהוֹנָדָב בֶּן-רֵכָב אָבִינוּ, לְכֹל, אֲשֶׁר צִוָּנוּ:  לְבִלְתִּי שְׁתוֹת-יַיִן, כָּל-יָמֵינוּ–אֲנַחְנוּ נָשֵׁינוּ, בָּנֵינוּ וּבְנֹתֵינוּ. 8 And we have hearkened to the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;
ט  וּלְבִלְתִּי בְּנוֹת בָּתִּים, לְשִׁבְתֵּנוּ; וְכֶרֶם וְשָׂדֶה וָזֶרַע, לֹא יִהְיֶה-לָּנוּ. 9 nor to build houses for us to dwell in, neither to have vineyard, or field, or seed;
10 but we have dwelt in tents, and have hearkened, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.
יא  וַיְהִי, בַּעֲלוֹת נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּר מֶלֶךְ-בָּבֶל אֶל-הָאָרֶץ, וַנֹּאמֶר בֹּאוּ וְנָבוֹא יְרוּשָׁלִַם, מִפְּנֵי חֵיל הַכַּשְׂדִּים וּמִפְּנֵי חֵיל אֲרָם; וַנֵּשֶׁב, בִּירוּשָׁלִָם.  {פ} 11 But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, that we said: Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Arameans; so we dwell at Jerusalem.’ {P}
12 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying:
יג  כֹּה-אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת, אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, הָלֹךְ וְאָמַרְתָּ לְאִישׁ יְהוּדָה, וּלְיוֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלִָם:  הֲלוֹא תִקְחוּ מוּסָר לִשְׁמֹעַ אֶל-דְּבָרַי, נְאֻם-יְהוָה. 13 ‘Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Go, and say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to My words? saith the LORD.
14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are performed, and unto this day they drink none, for they hearken to their father’s commandment; but I have spoken unto you, speaking betimes and often, and ye have not hearkened unto Me.
15 I have sent also unto you all My servants the prophets, sending them betimes and often, saying: Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers; but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto Me.
טז  כִּי הֵקִימוּ, בְּנֵי יְהוֹנָדָב בֶּן-רֵכָב, אֶת-מִצְוַת אֲבִיהֶם, אֲשֶׁר צִוָּם; וְהָעָם הַזֶּה, לֹא שָׁמְעוּ אֵלָי. 16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father which he commanded them, but this people hath not hearkened unto Me;
17 therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard, and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.’
יח  וּלְבֵית הָרֵכָבִים אָמַר יִרְמְיָהוּ, כֹּה-אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, יַעַן אֲשֶׁר שְׁמַעְתֶּם, עַל-מִצְוַת יְהוֹנָדָב אֲבִיכֶם; וַתִּשְׁמְרוּ, אֶת-כָּל-מִצְו‍ֹתָיו, וַתַּעֲשׂוּ, כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר-צִוָּה אֶתְכֶם. 18 And unto the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said: Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Because ye have hearkened to the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he commanded you;
יט  לָכֵן, כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת–אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל:  לֹא-יִכָּרֵת אִישׁ לְיוֹנָדָב בֶּן-רֵכָב, עֹמֵד לְפָנַי–כָּל-הַיָּמִים.  {פ} 19 therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: There shall not be cut off unto Jonadab the son of Rechab a man to stand before Me for ever.’ {P}

DAILY SCRIPTURES

Reading 1 Acts 18:23-28

After staying in Antioch some time,
Paul left and traveled in orderly sequence
through the Galatian country and Phrygia,
bringing strength to all the disciples.

A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria,
an eloquent speaker, arrived in Ephesus.
He was an authority on the Scriptures.
He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord and,
with ardent spirit, spoke and taught accurately about Jesus,
although he knew only the baptism of John.
He began to speak boldly in the synagogue;
but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him,
they took him aside
and explained to him the Way of God more accurately.
And when he wanted to cross to Achaia,
the brothers encouraged him
and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him.
After his arrival he gave great assistance
to those who had come to believe through grace.
He vigorously refuted the Jews in public,
establishing from the Scriptures that the Christ is Jesus.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 47:2-3, 8-9, 10

R.  God is king of all the earth.
All you peoples, clap your hands;
shout to God with cries of gladness.
For the LORD, the Most High, the awesome,
is the great king over all the earth.
R. God is king of all the earth.
For king of all the earth is God;
sing hymns of praise.
God reigns over the nations,
God sits upon his holy throne.
R. God is king of all the earth.
The princes of the peoples are gathered together
with the people of the God of Abraham.
For God’s are the guardians of the earth;
he is supreme.
R. God is king of all the earth.
Gospel Jn 16:23b-28
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.
Until now you have not asked anything in my name;
ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

“I have told you this in figures of speech.
The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures
but I will tell you clearly about the Father.
On that day you will ask in my name,
and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.
For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me
and have come to believe that I came from God.
I came from the Father and have come into the world.
Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
