Amos Chapter 2

Amos Chapter 2

1 Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Moab, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.
ב  וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי-אֵשׁ בְּמוֹאָב, וְאָכְלָה אַרְמְנוֹת הַקְּרִיּוֹת; וּמֵת בְּשָׁאוֹן מוֹאָב, בִּתְרוּעָה בְּקוֹל שׁוֹפָר. 2 So will I send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth; and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the horn;
ג  וְהִכְרַתִּי שׁוֹפֵט, מִקִּרְבָּהּ; וְכָל-שָׂרֶיהָ אֶהֱרוֹג עִמּוֹ, אָמַר יְהוָה.  {פ} 3 And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD. {P}
4 Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Judah, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they have rejected the law of the LORD, and have not kept His statutes, and their lies have caused them to err, after which their fathers did walk.
ה  וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי אֵשׁ, בִּיהוּדָה; וְאָכְלָה, אַרְמְנוֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָם.  {פ} 5 So will I send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem. {P}
ו  כֹּה, אָמַר יְהוָה, עַל-שְׁלֹשָׁה פִּשְׁעֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְעַל-אַרְבָּעָה לֹא אֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ:  עַל-מִכְרָם בַּכֶּסֶף צַדִּיק, וְאֶבְיוֹן בַּעֲבוּר נַעֲלָיִם. 6 Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Israel, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes;
ז  הַשֹּׁאֲפִים עַל-עֲפַר-אֶרֶץ בְּרֹאשׁ דַּלִּים, וְדֶרֶךְ עֲנָוִים יַטּוּ; וְאִישׁ וְאָבִיו, יֵלְכוּ אֶל-הַנַּעֲרָה, לְמַעַן חַלֵּל, אֶת-שֵׁם קָדְשִׁי. 7 That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the humble; and a man and his father go unto the same maid, to profane My holy name;
8 And they lay themselves down beside every altar upon clothes taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of them that have been fined.
9 Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
10 Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorites.
11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazirites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD.
12 But ye gave the Nazirites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying: ‘Prophesy not.’
13 Behold, I will make it creak under you, as a cart creaketh that is full of sheaves.
יד  וְאָבַד מָנוֹס מִקָּל, וְחָזָק לֹא-יְאַמֵּץ כֹּחוֹ; וְגִבּוֹר, לֹא-יְמַלֵּט נַפְשׁוֹ. 14 And flight shall fail the swift, and the strong shall not exert his strength, neither shall the mighty deliver himself;
טו  וְתֹפֵשׂ הַקֶּשֶׁת לֹא יַעֲמֹד, וְקַל בְּרַגְלָיו לֹא יְמַלֵּט; וְרֹכֵב הַסּוּס, לֹא יְמַלֵּט נַפְשׁוֹ. 15 Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself; neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself;
טז  וְאַמִּיץ לִבּוֹ, בַּגִּבּוֹרִים–עָרוֹם יָנוּס בַּיּוֹם-הַהוּא, נְאֻם-יְהוָה.  {פ} 16 And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD. {P}

DAILY SCRIPTURES

Reading 1 Rom 10:9-18

Brothers and sisters:
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.
For one believes with the heart and so is justified,
and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.
The Scripture says,
No one who believes in him will be put to shame.
There is no distinction between Jew and Greek;
the same Lord is Lord of all,
enriching all who call upon him.
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed?
And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without someone to preach?
And how can people preach unless they are sent?
As it is written,
How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news!
But not everyone has heeded the good news;
for Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?
Thus faith comes from what is heard,
and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.
But I ask, did they not hear?
Certainly they did; for

Their voice has gone forth to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 11

R. (10) The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.
or:
R. (John 6:63) Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.
The law of the LORD is perfect,
refreshing the soul;
The decree of the LORD is trustworthy,
giving wisdom to the simple.
R. The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.
or:
R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.
The precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
The command of the LORD is clear,
enlightening the eye.
R. The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.
or:
R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.
The fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring forever;
The ordinances of the LORD are true,
all of them just.
R. The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.
or:
R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.
They are more precious than gold,
than a heap of purest gold;
Sweeter also than syrup
or honey from the comb.
R. The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.
or:
R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

Gospel Mt 4:18-22

As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him.

DEAD BIRDS in INDIA!!!

The Centre has sent an alert to the Jharkhand government to remain cautious about a possible poultry infection, after a mysterious bird flu-like virus is believed to have killed between 500 and 1,000 crows in Jamshedpur, Bokaro and parts of Hazaribagh. Though an official intimation from the Union animal husbandry department is still to reach the state, a study on the crow deaths conducted at the animal disease laboratory in Bhopal found a virus resembling that of bird flu. However, the study allays fears about cattle, poultry and humans being infected because the virus was detected only in the brain of the dead crows. Joint commissioner at the department of animal husbandry, A B Negi, said the virus was not found in the fecal matter or esophageal swabs of the dead crows. This means it cannot spread from one crow to another or any other bird unless the flesh of an infected crow is consumed by another scavenger. “It is likely that a crow consuming a dead crow or any other scavenger may pick up the virus and get infected,” he said. A team of scientists from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute had visited Jamshedpur to collect samples of crow carcasses and made prima facie observations. IVRI joint director Rishendra Verma said there was no evidence to show that the poultry in Jamshedpur was infected. While a sizable population among tribals in Jharkhand consume crow meat and are in danger of being infected, the department of animal husbandry under the state government has issued public awareness advertisements to handle dead crows carefully and bury them. M K Sinha, the head of the zoology department, Ranchi University, has called for a detailed report on the deaths. “Mass deaths is something that needs to be handled with care so that the infection does not spread to other birds, cattle or humans,” he said. The symptoms shown by the infected crows include quivering, high body temperatures and convulsions.

Massive amounts of decaying Tuna dumped in PHILLIPINES!

Authorities have launched an investigation on the alleged dumping of an estimated 20 tons of decaying tuna in the shores of Maasim, Sarangani. Initial investigations by the local government showed that overfishing caused the fishkill. “Mananagot ang may-ari o management ng pumpboat,” said Jumbra Tama barangay chairman of Kanalo. Residents of Barangay Kanalo in Maasim woke up to the foul smell of dead fish on Monday. The livelihood of fishermen in the region was also affected because there is a possibility that the water has already been contaminated by the decaying fish. “Marine pollution ‘yan. Kapag na-identify ‘yung tao, maka-cancel ang lisensya niya,” said Bong Tuballes, head of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office in Sarangani. A fishing boat was reportedly seen dumping the tons of fish on Sunday. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources also said companies involved in overfishing will be held responsible. The area is known as the “tuna capital of the Philippines.”

LANDSLIDES in INDONESIA

Four people are dead and 30 others are missing after heavy rain triggered a landslide on the Indonesian island of Nias. The landslide slammed into a village in Majo Kampung Barije district on the island in North Sumatra province overnight, disaster management agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. Confirming the dead and missing in a text message, he said that 37 houses were buried under the mud. “Heavy rains the past three days had caused the hill to crumble. We are now still trying to pull out trapped victims from the landslide,” district disaster management agency official Robertna Mendeva said. “It’s difficult as it is still raining very heavily now.” Landslides usually triggered by heavy rain are a major killer in Indonesia, which is currently being lashed by monsoon downpours and widespread flooding.

EXTREME WEATHER in IRELAND!

The first winter ice is coming as motorists face another day of heavy rain and traffic chaos. Commuters in many parts of the country were affected yesterday as roads became impassable due to localised flooding. Met Eireann forecaster Dr Sandra Spillane said up to 50mm of rain had fallen in some areas in a 24-hour period. Met Eireann predicted rain sweeping eastwards today in all areas with strong southerly winds increasing to gale force of up to 100kmh. Meanwhile, forecasters said temperatures would dip below zero in many areas tomorrow night with a sharp ground frost, and the possibility of some icy patches. Heavy sleet and hail showers fell across north Donegal yesterday. While today’s rain will not be as heavy as yesterday, there is still a likelihood of spot flooding and motorists are being urged to drive with caution. Counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Galway and Mayo are expected to be worst affected. The country was battered yesterday morning as gale force winds of up to 100kmh hit parts of the east and southeast. Many roads remained impassable late into the day, including the N3 Dublin to Cavan road just outside Cavan. Cork endured traffic chaos as strong winds and torrential rainfall left dozens of roads flooded. Fermoy’s new flood protection barriers were deployed for the second time in nine days amid fears the River Blackwater could break its banks. The Sligo rescue helicopter has been enlisted to take supplies to Tory Island as high winds have ruled out a ferry service for the next few days.
