Jeremiah Chapter 32

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar.
2 Now at that time the king of Babylon’s army was besieging Jerusalem; and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah’s house.
ג  אֲשֶׁר כְּלָאוֹ, צִדְקִיָּהוּ מֶלֶךְ-יְהוּדָה לֵאמֹר:  מַדּוּעַ אַתָּה נִבָּא לֵאמֹר, כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה, הִנְנִי נֹתֵן אֶת-הָעִיר הַזֹּאת בְּיַד מֶלֶךְ-בָּבֶל, וּלְכָדָהּ. 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying: ‘Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say: Thus saith the LORD: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;
ד  וְצִדְקִיָּהוּ מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה, לֹא יִמָּלֵט מִיַּד הַכַּשְׂדִּים:  כִּי הִנָּתֹן יִנָּתֵן, בְּיַד מֶלֶךְ-בָּבֶל, וְדִבֶּר-פִּיו עִם-פִּיו, וְעֵינָיו אֶת-עֵינָו תִּרְאֶינָה. 4 and Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes;
ה  וּבָבֶל יוֹלִךְ אֶת-צִדְקִיָּהוּ, וְשָׁם יִהְיֶה, עַד-פָּקְדִי אֹתוֹ, נְאֻם-יְהוָה:  כִּי תִלָּחֲמוּ אֶת-הַכַּשְׂדִּים, לֹא תַצְלִיחוּ.  {פ} 5 and he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I remember him, saith the LORD; though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper?’ {P}
6 And Jeremiah said: ‘The word of the LORD came unto me, saying:
7 Behold, Hanamel, the son of Shallum thine uncle, shall come unto thee, saying: Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth; for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.’
8 So Hanamel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me: ‘Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.
9 And I bought the field that was in Anathoth of Hanamel mine uncle’s son, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.
10 And I subscribed the deed, and sealed it, and called witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.
יא  וָאֶקַּח, אֶת-סֵפֶר הַמִּקְנָה, אֶת-הֶחָתוּם הַמִּצְוָה וְהַחֻקִּים, וְאֶת-הַגָּלוּי. 11 So I took the deed of the purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions, and that which was open;
12 and I delivered the deed of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel mine uncle[‘s son], and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the deed of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the guard.
13 And I charged Baruch before them, saying:
יד  כֹּה-אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, לָקוֹחַ אֶת-הַסְּפָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֵת סֵפֶר הַמִּקְנָה הַזֶּה וְאֵת הֶחָתוּם וְאֵת סֵפֶר הַגָּלוּי הַזֶּה, וּנְתַתָּם, בִּכְלִי-חָרֶשׂ–לְמַעַן יַעַמְדוּ, יָמִים רַבִּים.  {ס} 14 ‘Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, this deed of the purchase, both that which is sealed, and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel; that they may continue many days. {S}
טו  כִּי כֹה אָמַר יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת, אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל:  עוֹד יִקָּנוּ בָתִּים וְשָׂדוֹת וּכְרָמִים, בָּאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת.  {פ} 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall yet again be bought in this land.’ {P}
16 Now after I had delivered the deed of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying:
יז  אֲהָהּ, אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, הִנֵּה אַתָּה עָשִׂיתָ אֶת-הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת-הָאָרֶץ, בְּכֹחֲךָ הַגָּדוֹל וּבִזְרֹעֲךָ הַנְּטוּיָה:  לֹא-יִפָּלֵא מִמְּךָ, כָּל-דָּבָר. 17 ‘Ah Lord GOD! behold, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by Thy great power and by Thy outstretched arm; there is nothing too hard for Thee;
יח  עֹשֶׂה חֶסֶד, לַאֲלָפִים, וּמְשַׁלֵּם עֲו‍ֹן אָבוֹת, אֶל-חֵיק בְּנֵיהֶם אַחֲרֵיהֶם:  הָאֵל הַגָּדוֹל הַגִּבּוֹר, יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת שְׁמוֹ. 18 who showest mercy unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them; the great, the mighty God, the LORD of hosts is His name;
יט  גְּדֹל, הָעֵצָה, וְרַב, הָעֲלִילִיָּה–אֲשֶׁר-עֵינֶיךָ פְקֻחוֹת, עַל-כָּל-דַּרְכֵי בְּנֵי אָדָם, לָתֵת לְאִישׁ כִּדְרָכָיו, וְכִפְרִי מַעֲלָלָיו. 19 great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men, to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings;
כ  אֲשֶׁר-שַׂמְתָּ אֹתוֹת וּמֹפְתִים בְּאֶרֶץ-מִצְרַיִם, עַד-הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה, וּבְיִשְׂרָאֵל, וּבָאָדָם; וַתַּעֲשֶׂה-לְּךָ שֵׁם, כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה. 20 who didst set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel and among other men; and madest Thee a name, as at this day;
כא  וַתֹּצֵא אֶת-עַמְּךָ אֶת-יִשְׂרָאֵל, מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם–בְּאֹתוֹת וּבְמוֹפְתִים, וּבְיָד חֲזָקָה וּבְאֶזְרוֹעַ נְטוּיָה, וּבְמוֹרָא, גָּדוֹל. 21 and didst bring forth Thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terror;
כב  וַתִּתֵּן לָהֶם אֶת-הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת, אֲשֶׁר-נִשְׁבַּעְתָּ לַאֲבוֹתָם לָתֵת לָהֶם–אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב, וּדְבָשׁ. 22 and gavest them this land, which Thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey;
כג  וַיָּבֹאוּ וַיִּרְשׁוּ אֹתָהּ, וְלֹא-שָׁמְעוּ בְקוֹלֶךָ ובתרותך (וּבְתוֹרָתְךָ) לֹא-הָלָכוּ–אֵת כָּל-אֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתָה לָהֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת, לֹא עָשׂוּ; וַתַּקְרֵא אֹתָם, אֵת כָּל-הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת. 23 and they came in, and possessed it; but they hearkened not to Thy voice, neither walked in Thy law; they have done nothing of all that Thou commandedst them to do; therefore Thou hast caused all this evil to befall them;
24 behold the mounds, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence; and what Thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, Thou seest it.
כה  וְאַתָּה אָמַרְתָּ אֵלַי, אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה, קְנֵה-לְךָ הַשָּׂדֶה בַּכֶּסֶף, וְהָעֵד עֵדִים; וְהָעִיר נִתְּנָה, בְּיַד הַכַּשְׂדִּים.  {ס} 25 Yet Thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD: Buy thee the field for money, and call witnesses; whereas the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’ {S}
26 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying:
27 ‘Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh; is there any thing too hard for Me?
כח  לָכֵן, כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה:  הִנְנִי נֹתֵן אֶת-הָעִיר הַזֹּאת בְּיַד הַכַּשְׂדִּים, וּבְיַד נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּר מֶלֶךְ-בָּבֶל–וּלְכָדָהּ. 28 Therefore thus saith the LORD: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it;
29 and the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set this city on fire, and burn it, with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered unto Baal, and poured out drink-offerings unto other gods, to provoke Me.
30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done that which was evil in My sight from their youth; for the children of Israel have only provoked Me with the work of their hands, saith the LORD.
לא  כִּי עַל-אַפִּי וְעַל-חֲמָתִי, הָיְתָה לִּי הָעִיר הַזֹּאת, לְמִן-הַיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר בָּנוּ אוֹתָהּ, וְעַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה–לַהֲסִירָהּ, מֵעַל פָּנָי. 31 For this city hath been to Me a provocation of Mine anger and of My fury from the day that they built it even unto this day, that I should remove it from before My face;
32 because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke Me, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
33 And they have turned unto Me the back, and not the face; and though I taught them, teaching them betimes and often, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.
34 But they set their abominations in the house whereupon My name is called, to defile it.
לה  וַיִּבְנוּ אֶת-בָּמוֹת הַבַּעַל אֲשֶׁר בְּגֵיא בֶן-הִנֹּם, לְהַעֲבִיר אֶת-בְּנֵיהֶם וְאֶת-בְּנוֹתֵיהֶם לַמֹּלֶךְ, אֲשֶׁר לֹא-צִוִּיתִים וְלֹא עָלְתָה עַל-לִבִּי, לַעֲשׂוֹת הַתּוֹעֵבָה הַזֹּאת–לְמַעַן, הַחֲטִי אֶת-יְהוּדָה.  {ס} 35 And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to set apart their sons and their daughters unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into My mind, that they should do this abomination; to cause Judah to sin. {S}
36 And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say: It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence:
לז  הִנְנִי מְקַבְּצָם מִכָּל-הָאֲרָצוֹת, אֲשֶׁר הִדַּחְתִּים שָׁם בְּאַפִּי וּבַחֲמָתִי וּבְקֶצֶף גָּדוֹל; וַהֲשִׁבֹתִים אֶל-הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה, וְהֹשַׁבְתִּים לָבֶטַח. 37 Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries, whither I have driven them in Mine anger, and in My fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them back unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely;
לח  וְהָיוּ לִי, לְעָם; וַאֲנִי, אֶהְיֶה לָהֶם לֵאלֹהִים. 38 and they shall be My people, and I will be their God;
לט  וְנָתַתִּי לָהֶם לֵב אֶחָד, וְדֶרֶךְ אֶחָד, לְיִרְאָה אוֹתִי, כָּל-הַיָּמִים–לְטוֹב לָהֶם, וְלִבְנֵיהֶם אַחֲרֵיהֶם. 39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me for ever; for the good of them, and of their children after them;
40 and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put My fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from Me.
מא  וְשַׂשְׂתִּי עֲלֵיהֶם, לְהֵטִיב אוֹתָם; וּנְטַעְתִּים בָּאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת, בֶּאֱמֶת–בְּכָל-לִבִּי, וּבְכָל-נַפְשִׁי.  {ס} 41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land in truth with My whole heart and with My whole soul. {S}
42 For thus saith the LORD: Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.
43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say: It is desolate, without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
מד  שָׂדוֹת בַּכֶּסֶף יִקְנוּ, וְכָתוֹב בַּסֵּפֶר וְחָתוֹם וְהָעֵד עֵדִים, בְּאֶרֶץ בִּנְיָמִן וּבִסְבִיבֵי יְרוּשָׁלִַם וּבְעָרֵי יְהוּדָה וּבְעָרֵי הָהָר, וּבְעָרֵי הַשְּׁפֵלָה וּבְעָרֵי הַנֶּגֶב:  כִּי-אָשִׁיב אֶת-שְׁבוּתָם, נְאֻם-יְהוָה.  {פ} 44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe the deeds, and seal them, and call witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill-country, and in the cities of the Lowland, and in the cities of the South; for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.’ {P}

Reading 1 Acts 17:15, 22-18:1

After Paul’s escorts had taken him to Athens,
they came away with instructions for Silas and Timothy
to join him as soon as possible.Then Paul stood up at the Areopagus and said:
“You Athenians, I see that in every respect
you are very religious.
For as I walked around looking carefully at your shrines,
I even discovered an altar inscribed, ‘To an Unknown God.’
What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you.
The God who made the world and all that is in it,
the Lord of heaven and earth,
does not dwell in sanctuaries made by human hands,
nor is he served by human hands because he needs anything.
Rather it is he who gives to everyone life and breath and everything.
He made from one the whole human race
to dwell on the entire surface of the earth,
and he fixed the ordered seasons and the boundaries of their regions,
so that people might seek God,
even perhaps grope for him and find him,
though indeed he is not far from any one of us.
For ‘In him we live and move and have our being,’
as even some of your poets have said,
‘For we too are his offspring.’
Since therefore we are the offspring of God,
we ought not to think that the divinity is like an image
fashioned from gold, silver, or stone by human art and imagination.
God has overlooked the times of ignorance,
but now he demands that all people everywhere repent
because he has established a day on which he will ‘judge the world
with justice’ through a man he has appointed,
and he has provided confirmation for all
by raising him from the dead.”

When they heard about resurrection of the dead,
some began to scoff, but others said,
“We should like to hear you on this some other time.”
And so Paul left them.
But some did join him, and became believers.
Among them were Dionysius,
a member of the Court of the Areopagus,
a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

After this he left Athens and went to Corinth.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 148:1-2, 11-12, 13, 14

R. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Praise the LORD from the heavens;
praise him in the heights.
Praise him, all you his angels;
praise him, all you his hosts.
R. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Let the kings of the earth and all peoples,
the princes and all the judges of the earth,
Young men too, and maidens,
old men and boys.
R. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;
His majesty is above earth and heaven.
R. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
He has lifted up the horn of his people;
Be this his praise from all his faithful ones,
from the children of Israel, the people close to him.
Alleluia.
R. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Gospel Jn 16:12-15

Jesus said to his disciples:
“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.
But when he comes, the Spirit of truth,
he will guide you to all truth.
He will not speak on his own,
but he will speak what he hears,
and will declare to you the things that are coming.
He will glorify me,
because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
Everything that the Father has is mine;
for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine
and declare it to you.”
